Propane is used every day for heating, cooking, and hot water—but it’s a flammable fuel and must be respected. That’s why an odor is added to propane, so leaks can be detected quickly. Every member of your household should know the smell of propane and what to do in case of an emergency.

Recognizing a Leak—Know the Smell of Propane

Propane has a strong, “rotten egg” odor added to it so leaks are easy to detect. Every member of your household should know the smell and what to do if they notice it.

What To Do If You Smell Gas or Suspect a Leak

  1. Put out all smoking materials and any open flames.

  2. Do not operate appliances, switches, or thermostats.

  3. Get everyone outside and move away from the gas equipment.

  4. Shut off the gas supply at the tank or cylinder, if safe to do so.

  5. Call Myers Propane immediately. Use a neighbor’s phone if you smell propane inside your home.

  6. Stay outside and do not re-enter until the leak has been found and fixed.

Relighting Your Pilots

To relight your pilot lights:

  • Turn all appliance controls and shutoff valves to “OFF.”

  • Follow the manufacturer’s lighting instructions carefully.

  • Always check for the smell of propane before lighting.
